The iPad hasn’t even hit store shelves yet, but it’s already sold out. The first batch of iPads has already been snatched up by people who pre-ordered it online, and anyone who wants to order the device now will have to wait until April 12 to get their hands on one. An analysis by a team at Investor Village’s AAPL Sanity board estimated 120,000 iPads were sold online during the first 24 hours. So is Steve Jobs pumping his fist in triumph or holding his head in disappointment?

Apple.com To Delay International iPad Launch

Apple (AAPL) are going to be delaying the international release of the iPad till May, due to selling more than 500,000 in the US. Apple have stated that demand for the iPad was far higher than expected and is likely to exceed the supply over the next several weeks due to more people seeing and touching an iPad, and therefore purchasing one.

Apple will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. In the US, iPads range in price from $499 to $829, depending on the model and features. So far only the wi-fi connected model has been on sale, but a 3G version will be shipped in the US from the end of April.

This isn’t to ask whether it will be successful. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is a master at setting goals and then exceeding them, and a lot of folks are clearly excited about the iPad — but the first generation iPhone was kind of a mistake that got corrected in later versions. As I look at similar products that seem better thought through, I’m increasingly thinking that Steve Jobs’ initial concerns with this offering were well founded and that, at least initially, the iPad will have trouble reaching its potential.

Count Acer (2353:TT) Chairman J.T. Wang among the many people in the tech world awaiting the debut of Apple’s (AAPL) new tablet computer. “I’m eager to see what Apple has done,” says Wang, the top executive at Acer, the world’s second-largest PC vendor behind Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Wang and his Acer colleagues have some guesses about what the tablet, which Apple is scheduled to unveil on Jan.27, will be like. “It’s going to be a big-screen iPhone,” he predicts. “The content can be bigger, more graphic, with more video and text, but they are going to duplicate a successful model.”

Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) fiscal first-quarter profit jumped 50% as the consumerelectronics giant doubled the amount of iPhone smartphones it sold and postedunexpectedly strong sales of its Macintosh computers. Results easily topped WallStreet’s expectations.

In the quarter ended Dec. 26, 2009, Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple on Mondaysaid it sold 8.7 million iPhones during a very strong holiday sales period.
