SSDs are dead; long live the SSD – or something like that. Sandisk today outlined its vision for mobile devices filled with smaller versions of the Nand flash memory hard disk and cited smartbooks as the obvious device in which they will find a home.

Solid state disk drives first appeared in 2007 and were originally assumed to be natural companions to the netbook: their light weight, small footprint and lack of moving parts that could be damaged seemed to make them an obvious successor to the hard disk drive. But while high-end ultraportable laptops such as the premium model of the Apple Macbook Air and some of the first generation of notebooks came in SSD models, they haven’t been widely adopted.

A handful of Chinese companies have been pumping out cheap knockoffs of the Macbook Air for at least a year or two. These notebooks tend to be thin, light, and feature keyboards and touchpads that look an awful lot like those on a certain pricey machine from Apple. But they also tend to be loaded up with Windows or Linux and bogged down by a relatively slow Intel Atom processor rather than the speedy Core 2o Duo CPU found in a Macbook Air.

You can help the environment by making one simple decision. by going green with your computers. This is done by choosing notebooks computers that are environmentally friendly and long on charge. new “green laptops” take the idea of an environmentally friendly notebook computer even further. they are smaller than other notebooks, last longer on a charge, and comply with most environmental regulations. These ultraportble, small footprint, lighter weight notebooks are inherently “greener” than heavier, larger footprint products for a few reasons: they are designed to deliver the desired performance while consuming fewer materials for manufacturing and less energy for shipment and distribution. Packaging requirements are also reduced, saving materials and energy. Laptops don’t use as much power as a desktop, mostly because the processor is only drawing about 35W or less, compared to about 65W or more for a desktop CPU. the added benefit is that your electrical bill won’t be as high either.

We would like more details on this one, but it looks like DeviceVM has announced Splashtop 2.0.

In a rather terse blog posts the company noted that version 2.0 of their instant-on, Linux-based OS has arrived. It was noted that v2.0 improves every aspect of the software–it’s faster, works better with 3G connections, and it has an improved touch control experience. Other updates include a new, customizable application dock, a custom desktops, instant search, and “visual navigation” (is there any other kind?) for favorites and previous searches.

the rise of netbooks has almost uniformly damaged the entire notebook industry’s performance this year, a new DisplaySearch study shows. While shipments of notebooks more than doubled to 33.3 million, their lower prices actually dragged down revenue for the entire notebook industry by 12 percent to about $109.4 million. the revenue for netbooks themselves was also disproportionately lower and increased a relatively soft 72 percent.
